• CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE HEALTH CARE SETTING

The health care industry has a critical role to play in climate change mitigation. Global Green and Healthy Hospitals, GGHH is a network that brings together hospitals, health systems, and health organizations from around the world under the shared goal of reducing the environmental footprint of the health sector and contributing to improved public and environmental health. We caught up with Nick Thorp the Global Community Manager of GGHH and he explains what they are doing to improve public and environmental health.

Sonia Roschnik, non-executive Director of Health Care Without Harm Europe, says that health care should be more creating and not damaging health with its environmental footprints

With the launch of the 2020 Health Care Climate Challenge at the Paris Climate Conference in 2015, the GGHH Network is increasingly working to mobilize health care to reduce its own carbon footprint, become more climate resilient, and exert leadership to help every society transition to a low carbon energy future.

  • THE ORDEAL OF MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE IN NIGERIA

Forest communities in Cross River State, southeast Nigeria, are losing rights and livelihoods as their forests are being locked down by the government which seeks increased revenues through a United Nations backed ‘carbon trading’ scheme that promises to pay cash for projects that claim to preserve forests to alleviate global climate change. With deforestation believed to be responsible for about a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanism was introduced through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to focus on + controlling the rate of deforestation from logging and degradation. Social Action an NGO fighting for the rights of indigenous people in Nigeria is one of the civil society organizations at the Cop22. Ken Henshaw enlightens the ordeal faced by communities in the cross river state of Nigeria.

This might not be a problem affecting indigenous communities in Nigeria but also in some African countries.

  • How fodder growing can be a solution to climate change

Fodder, is a type of animal feed, used specifically to feed domesticated livestock, such as cattle, goats, sheep, horses, chickens and pigs. It can be grown throughout the year and allows increasing amount of milk in dairy cows. A Moroccan company Hydro Barley is promoting fodder growing, supplying it to small farmers in Morocco as Hamza Inamin one of the members explains.

If farmers engage in fodder growing, they will have enough food to feed their animals however the cost of fodder seeds needs to subsidized to enable farmers adopt to this method.
